Welcome to Cruiser Sailing at Portchester Sailing Club.
Portchester Sailing Club is a very good location for cruiser sailors and the club offers a range of deep water and half tide moorings. The waters of Portsmouth Harbour, the Solent and beyond offer a variety of sailing opportunities.
Naturally, the most sheltered and closest moorings are more popular and have a waiting list. Shoreside facilities include hard standing for cruisers between October and April, a derrick for stepping and unstepping masts, and a pontoon, which is accessible for around 2 hours either side of high water. Cruisers from Portchester enjoy trips around the Solent, and further beyond. Some of our members have sailed to all corners of the globe. Cruises in company are a good way to expand your horizons, and these are organised regularly.
On the racing side, cruising sailors compete in the annual Interclub series, which combine a good social weekend with a bit of friendly racing. More competitive members also compete in other regattas such as Cowes Week, and the Round the Island Race.
We have a series of rallies during the season. The Folly is one of our favourite locations.
The Club owns a submersible boat-lifter to allow us to recover boats from the water at the end of the season and relaunch them in the Spring. We store cruisers up to 31ft – 32ft in the Club compound the winter. As space is limited there is always a waiting list.
Portchester Sailing Club is the premier dinghy racing club in Portsmouth Harbour and is perfectly placed to utilise the full harbour waters, for both racing and day trippers. The sheltered slipway aids launching and boat recovery and the protected nature of harbour sailing, provides the perfect location for sailors of all standards to race and train, in all manner of conditions.
At Portchester we race between the months of April and October. The Harbour is tidal and so we tailor our sailing around the best conditions, whilst ensuring a varied and challenging race program for all. The secure Dinghy Park is available throughout the racing season and all racing is managed with Race officers and rescue craft.
All weekend racing is organised around high tides and throughout the season we provide a handicap Saturday schedule alongside trophy racing on both selected Sundays and Bank Holidays. Weekend sailing is further enhanced with Regatta weekends, windward / leeward short courses, pursuit racing and combined dinghy/cruiser events. All supported by an active Social section.
During the week and throughout the season a well supported Wednesday and Friday program provides Fast and Slow handicap racing on our tidal courses. A junior series runs throughout August and alongside senior racing and various presentations and race briefings are organised during the season to assist both novice and experienced sailors.
Working closely with the Clubs Training section, we endeavour to provide safe, fun dinghy sailing for all skill levels and ages and we welcome like minded sailors of all levels to join us for another great seasons sailing.
We are not prescriptive in class of Dinghy. However, we do offer some excellent racing within some of our growing fleets. These include Topper, Solo, RS400 and Lasers all competing alongside Fireball, OK, RS200, 600, Visions and Fevas and many more.
